Empowering Women through Sewing

Women's Empowerment

Iliso is dedicated to empowering women in the community through several initiatives that aim to enhance creative and entrepreneurial skills.

With support from organisations like the Ackerman Pick n Pay Foundation, Nutrimetics Australia, Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), and the Community Works Program (CWP) Iliso has successfully trained more than 60 women in the art of sewing and entrepreneurship.

These women are equipped with the skills to create a variety of items, including aprons, placemats, curtains, and greeting cards. Through their newfound expertise, they are not only able to produce high-quality goods, but also to generate income for themselves and their families. In 2020 following the emergence of COVID-19, Iliso managed to sew masks and give them away within the community. Other masks were sold by the Department of Social Development for their nutrition sites in the Western Cape.

Iliso ensures that the women who participate in the sewing enterprises receive 75 percent of the income from their sales, allowing them to directly benefit from their hard work and creativity. The remaining 25 percent is allocated to Iliso to support the continuation and growth of the program.

Celebrating Purpose

Through partnerships with retailers like Wilderness Safaris and Roots Africa Tours, our handmade greeting cards have found their way onto the shelves of discerning customers who appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship. These partnerships not only provide a platform for our products, but also contribute to the growth of our organization and ability to reach the broader community.

Bulelwa Dyonta is an EPWP participant who came to Iliso as a Volunteer in 2018.

She came to the programme with no sewing skills and was trained with a few participants. After her original training programme, she continued to be a part of the project. Now, Bulelwa spreads her knowledge through training courses for women to build their sewing skills. "I am thanking God for linking me with the Iliso organization and gain lots of skills and be able to put something on the table for my family." said Bulelwa.

What sets our greeting cards apart is not just their aesthetic appeal, but also their purpose. Proceeds from the sale of these cards go directly towards providing a stipend for our dedicated volunteers.

By empowering women to become entrepreneurs and providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed, Iliso is making a significant impact on the lives of the individuals and the community as a whole.

Through our projects, Iliso is not only fostering economic independence, but also promoting dignity, self-reliance, and empowerment among women.
